CURATED BY THEO

The featured artist for this weeks SEASONS playlist update is Cincinnati, Ohio -based vocalist & song-writer MUWOSI (Monica Windom).  The playlist features her track “Frozen Blueberries” off of her recent EP ‘Of Compassion’ which features her silk-smooth vocals over much needed contemporary R&B / Jazz / Hip-Hop / Electronic influenced production.

And I had the chance to interview her on some of her inspirations, writing process & more!

Interview:

Hey Muwosi! This is actually the first time getting some questions answered from some artists we’ve featured! So I definitely appreciate you taking the time to talk with me.

In relation to your music style/taste, who are your biggest inspirations in music?

In relation to my music style/taste the top 5 biggest inspirations are Stevie Wonder, Georgia Anne Muldrow, Bill Evans, Salami Rose Joe Louis, and Solange!

How did you get your start into making music?

I got my start into making music in 2015 when my dad (willingly) installed Logic Pro into my laptop. He also makes beats, is a songwriter and a pianist. So yes, I would just get my hands dirty by figuring out how to make beats and I would just sing over the beats and go out into the city ( Cincinnati) and network with other artists- and score shows which fueled my musical start!

Do you prefer folks to stream your music, or enjoy via physical sales like tapes & vinyls?

Being that I am used to folks streaming my music- I would say I do appreciate that option because it seems most convenient and universal. If you're at a house party all you need is an aux, or bluetooth lol. BUT, there is something extremely unique about a physical copy. I value it more because I can hold it in my hand as my own possession! It's also nice to play music through alternative forms like via cassette player, record player, and a CD player.

I see you worked with Lionmilk on production & Swarvy on the mixing. They’re of course some pretty well-known LA artists. How’d that come about?

Lionmilk, who is a talented jazz pianist-composer-and producer, and I were on the same show lineup together- that's how we first crossed paths. Long story short we started hanging out a lot which resulted in a lot of music being made. Regarding my 3-track EP 'Of Compassion' I wrote 'Frozen Blueberries' and 'A Song For Someone' initially and gave him the rough sketch to which he amazingly brought to life. We also did a bunch of live virtual sets every Sunday called 'Sunset Vibrations' which was us improvising while the sun set. You can watch those videos on youtube either on his channel, or on mine! Swarvy is someone I first crossed paths with Swarvy at Mndsgn's house. Swarvy is a great musician and specializes in mixing and mastering (which I know nothing about, yet, haha) I wanted him to mix and master my 3-track EP called 'Of Compassion' because it intuitively felt like the right thing to do.

What emotions do you want listeners to feel when they listen to your music?

The emotion(s) that I want those that listen to my music to feel include all that of loved based emotions! Happiness, joy, love, etc. I also want to promote empowerment, self assuredness, and compassion through my music because I, myself am someone who practices pure love spiritual healing. I know my lyrics to songs I have released don't quite talk about pure love and spiritual healing, but being that I practice it through my actions and day to day life- I can only hope that- those love based emotions can be felt through my music. Does that make sense? Haha

When talking about visuals / music videos, do you feel they help or hinder the way people accept your music?

Regarding the music videos and visuals I have out now, I believe they help people to embrace my music. I believe that because people appreciate visuals. Now, the types of music videos/visuals people appreciate are case by case and subjective. Some people prefer super HD quality videos that show exactly what the lyrics speak of, and others appreciate vintage/lofi and spontaneous videos that don't necessarily go with the lyrics, and some people appreciate any style of music video/visual. For me, my music videos capture me in my natural state of being (smiling, dancing, performing, being, etc) so to watch my visuals and music videos gives you more insight on who I am as a person.

Is there any artist / producer you’d love to work with?

A few producer's I'd love to work with are Dj Harrisson, Salami Joe Rose Louis, and I'd love to continue working with Lionmilk- as I truly believe we have great musical chemistry.

A lot of artists say that it’s hard to “get out of Ohio”, but I see you have a pretty heavy fan-base outside of Ohio. What do you contribute that to?

I would like to contribute my outside-of-ohio-fanbase to not only my ability to virtually network, but to musical heads/people that willingly represent and promote me and my sound to others. I also did live in LA for 2 years which really helped me to meet and network with so many different types of people. I want my fanbase to be on every continent!

So the featured song “Frozen Blueberries” – how’d you come to that title? I know it was mentioned in the song for a brief second haha

I came up with the song title 'Frozen Blueberries' due to it being super hot in the summer with no AC and all I had was cold showers and frozen fruits. I'd freeze every fruit and the one I really enjoyed eating was Frozen Blueberries! Haha.

Your lyrics and harmonies are very addictingly smooth to me personally. What’s your writing process like? Typically start with feelings / themes / daydreams?

My writing process differs from moment to moment. I write a lot. I'm always writing out my feelings whether it be to check in with myself- or for the intentional purpose of songwriting. When writing to a beat, i'll record myself improvising/ free flow singing to it and then i'll go in add lyrics to what i mumbled (if I can't make out what i was saying), or i'll pull out my journey and find a passage that I think would resonate and i'll sing what I wrote out. When writing without a beat, I simply just sing acapella and create a song like that. Once I have a foundation recorded, i'll then start harmonizing (which is my favorite part). I use the piano to help me know which harmonies sound the best and which ones clash.

With being a curator, I’m always digging for low-key artists from around the world and of course Ohio. What are some artists you’d say folks should also look out for?

Some artists people should look out for are Peyton, Keiyaa, Liv.e, Leo Pastel, Sudan Archives, Sahara Grim, Matt Martians, Suicide Rascal, Grandace, and DayoGold. There are soooo many so I just named a few that I personally listen to.

I see this recent drop ‘Of Compassion’ was just a 3 track EP. Any album talks in the works? Or just some upcoming singles & visuals?

I am currently looking for a videographer to shoot for Frozen Blueberries. I also do have an Album I'm working on that Lionmilk is a part of. In the meantime, I do have a single called 'Who I Am' that I plan to release soon. I also am working on a track for Daru Jones that I think people will vibe to.

Muwosi, thank you for doing this. I truly appreciate having you (and your music!)

Thank you so much, THEO, for your interest in me! I enjoyed answering these questions and can't wait for your finished work regarding this interview! Peace and Love! Xoxoxoxo
